A Prayer for Historical and Cultural Understanding
The Bible was written in cultures different from ours. This prayer asks for respect for historical context so modern assumptions do not replace the meaning of the text.
God, help me respect the world in which Scripture was written. Give me curiosity about history, language, customs, and literary form. Keep me from assuming that my culture is the measure of every passage. Use careful study to clarify meaning and protect me from careless interpretation. Let context deepen rather than weaken my confidence in Your Word.
Amen.
