All 66 books, in order
The Bible is a library of 66 books written over roughly 1,500 years by many authors, yet telling one unfolding story that leads to Jesus. The 39 books of the Old Testament tell of creation, God's covenant with Israel, and the promise of a Savior; the 27 books of the New Testament tell of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, the birth of the church, and the hope of His return. Browse verses by topicHow to search the Bible like a pro
Our Bible search can do two very different things: look up a specific passage, or hunt for words and phrases across the whole Bible. A few tips will help you find exactly what you're after.
Look up a passage
- By reference: type a book, chapter, and verse — for example John 3:16, Romans 8, or 1 Timothy 6:17-19.
- Ranges: use a hyphen for a range of chapters or verses, like Isaiah 40-42 or Psalm 23:1-6.
- Several at once: separate references with a comma, such as John 3, Romans 8:28.
- Abbreviations work too: Gen 1, Ps 23, Mt 5, 1 Cor 13.
- Compare translations: pick several versions and view them side by side (parallel) or one after another.
Search for words & phrases
- All words: finds verses that contain every word you enter, in any order.
- Exact phrase: finds the words together, in order — try love one another.
- Any words / exclude words: broaden your search, or filter out words you don't want.
- Narrow the scope: search only the Old or New Testament, a section like the Gospels, or a single book.
- Whole-word vs. beginnings: match exact words, or the beginning of words (so love also finds loved and lovely).
